I’m Gary Howell, the founder and managing director of Morgan Walsh.
I set up the business in 2006 and have been helping companies overcome their business challenges ever since.
Why? Because I’m fascinated with how things work. I’m the sort of person who barely notices the car until its engine or electronics need attention. I like to really understand the nitty-gritty of all types of processes, mechanisms and systems.
My thirst for solving technical challenges led me to study electronic engineering at the Ministry of Defence. I became best apprentice of the year before gaining a distinction studying for a Higher National Certificate in electronics.
Lifting 50 people into the air
Between my apprenticeship and setting up Morgan Walsh, I held many responsible positions. In the early 2000s, I trained and worked as a commercial airline pilot and flew passengers around Europe for Air Wales.
Many people are attracted to this type of role for the perceived glamour and opportunities to travel the globe. My fascination was more practical: I wanted to know how a tube of aluminium could lift 50 people off the ground from one country and land them safely in another.
Solving problems in businesses of every size
The roles I’ve mentioned may seem quite distant to some people. But I’ve also worked with a number of start-up companies, helping them overcome teething challenges that were hampering their growth.
The vast difference between frugally-financed start-ups and some of the biggest financial institutions in the world has given me such a breadth and depth of skills and experience I feel confident about tackling challenges faced by businesses of any size.
Entrusted with billions of pounds
I was fascinated with money or, more precisely, the movement of it.
This led to me to work as a trading floor consultant for many of London’s most illustrious merchant banks. There, I was entrusted to work on the financial systems through which billions of pounds flowed.
My pride in Morgan Walsh is its excellent record of finding technical solutions that save companies more money than the cost of the investment.
Corporate social responsibility
In my spare time, I volunteer as a business mentor for the Welsh Government.
To relax, I play saxophone and clarinet and am learning to play the piano.
